Air-Supported Halls for Public & Commercial Swimming Pools

CENTAURY+ designs and manufactures swimming pool air domes for public and commercial facilities. An air-supported hall encloses the pool and surrounding deck, creating full-height indoor space for training, swimming lessons and recreation. The hall's heating system warms the indoor air; pool-water heating and treatment remain separate systems.

For a municipality, swimming club, school or leisure operator, the goal is to keep an outdoor pool in use beyond summer. The hall is designed around your site, operating season and indoor conditions, rather than supplied as a small cover fitted to a garden pool.

How Does an Air-Supported Pool Dome Work?

A swimming pool air dome is a membrane building supported by air pressure rather than internal beams or poles. A dedicated air-handling unit (AHU) maintains a slight overpressure, typically 150-300 Pa, keeping the high-strength fabric membrane taut and secure. The AHU intelligently manages inflation, ventilation and heating. The result is a spacious, unobstructed area around the pool, protected from the elements.

The terms pool air dome, air-supported pool enclosure and pool bubble can describe this type of structure. Here, they mean a walk-in swimming facility with usable space around the water, not a floating pool cover.

Our standard double-layer membrane creates a thermal air pocket, reducing heat loss by up to 30%.

Main Components

  • Double-layer membrane: standard on all domes, providing superior thermal insulation.
  • Air-handling unit: provides inflation air, ventilation and air heating.
  • Automated diesel backup: standard on every dome; starts automatically during a power outage to maintain full inflation pressure without operator intervention.
  • Secure anchoring: fixed firmly to a concrete ring beam for maximum stability.
  • Revolving and emergency doors: provide safe, easy, pressure-controlled access, with accessibility and evacuation requirements included in the plan.

Air Heating, Ventilation and Humidity

The hall heating system heats air, not pool water. Warm air is supplied to the occupied space through the air-handling system. The existing pool-water heating and treatment equipment must be considered separately when planning the whole facility. See our air-dome heating options for heat-source choices.

Warm pool water releases moisture into the hall. Ventilation, indoor air temperature, water temperature, occupancy and membrane surface temperatures therefore need to be considered together. Inflation airflow alone does not prove that humidity control is adequate. Depending on the design conditions, additional moisture-removal equipment may be required; it should be specified in the project scope, not assumed to be included.

No enclosure is automatically condensation-proof. Our guide to condensation in air domes explains how to distinguish moisture between membrane layers from unwanted condensation on the indoor-facing surface.

Measured Example: A Pool Hall in Late Winter

Our published case study follows one 32 m × 12 m × 6 m pool air dome on 7 March 2026. At 06:00, the hourly average indoor air temperature was 21.5 °C while the outdoor average was −0.9 °C. Through the night, indoor hourly averages stayed between 21.4 and 21.6 °C.

These are air-temperature measurements from one installation on one day, not pool-water temperatures, a recommended setpoint for every pool, or a guarantee of performance or energy costs at another site. The full 24-hour pool-dome case study includes the hourly table, heating operation and pressure data.

What Changes for the Pool Operator?

Space for Swimming Programmes

The hall layout includes the water, poolside circulation and access routes needed for lessons, club training and recreation. It shields the pool from rain, wind and falling debris, keeping the water cleaner and reducing maintenance and chemical use.

Year-Round, All-Weather Use

The hall provides full, comfortable access to the pool area in all weather conditions, year-round. Air heating and ventilation create a warm swimming environment through colder months.

Energy Savings

Our standard double-layer membrane dramatically reduces heat loss from wind and evaporation, cutting heating costs by up to 30%.

Planning and Cost of a Swimming Pool Air Dome

The cost of an air-supported pool enclosure depends on the whole hall footprint, not just the water surface. Include deck space, clear height, foundations, access, air handling, heating, utilities and installation when comparing proposals. Our indicative air-dome prices provide general context; they are not a quotation for a complete swimming-pool facility.

Anchoring options include custom frame attachments or ground anchors for above-ground pools, and a robust concrete ring beam for inground pools. The former allows simpler, faster setup and relocation if required; the latter requires professional foundation work and provides superior stability for a permanent installation. Both are engineered for high stability in demanding weather conditions. Our specialists assess the site and recommend the appropriate solution. The proposal identifies what is included and what remains with the operator or other contractors. Hall inflation backup is separate from backup power for pool filtration and water heating.

How Is a Pool Hall Different from a Low Pool Cover?

An air-supported hall creates full-height space over the water and surrounding deck, with engineered anchoring, access doors and air-handling equipment. CENTAURY+ domes have an expected lifespan of 20-30 years, compared with 10-15 years for rigid pool covers and 2-5 years for solar blankets. A floating cover covers the water when the pool is not in use. A low-profile rigid enclosure has different clearance and access limits; some rigid enclosures do allow swimming underneath. Compare usable space, ventilation and intended operation, not just whether a product is called a “pool dome”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, when the hall and its air-handling system are designed for the local winter conditions and intended swimming operation. Air heating, ventilation, humidity control, pool-water systems and weather operating limits all need to be planned together. The measured example above illustrates one installation, not a universal temperature or cost guarantee.

No. The hall's heating system heats the indoor air. Pool-water heating and water treatment are separate systems and must be specified as part of the wider pool project.

A useful price requires the hall dimensions, site location, operating season, indoor conditions and agreed delivery scope. Foundations, air handling, heating, access and utilities affect the budget as well as the membrane. Send these details for a project quotation rather than applying the price of a small pool cover to an entire swimming hall.

Installation is remarkably fast. For a typical pool installation, once the foundation is ready, our professional technicians can complete the full installation and inflation in just 2-3 days.

Our domes are engineered to meet EN 13782:2015 standards and built for challenging weather. An intelligent control system continuously monitors external wind speed and automatically increases internal pressure to maintain stability and safety during high winds. Every CENTAURY+ dome comes standard with a diesel-powered backup unit. If mains power is lost, it starts automatically to maintain full inflation pressure, keeping the dome secure and operational without operator intervention.
